HISTORY
When it debuted in the late '90s, the Porsche Boxster ushered in an era of the affordable Porsche convertible featuring a balanced mid-engine layout, great handling and steering, and the performance of a flat-6 engine. The Porsche Boxster is available in the base version, the more powerful Boxster S and the lightweight Spyder. The base model has a horizontally opposed 2.9-liter six-cylinder engine rated at 255 hp and 214 pound-feet of torque. The Boxster S has a 3.4-liter flat-6 that produces 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Standard on every model is a six-speed manual, with Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (named PDK) optional. This transmission operates in full automatic mode or with gear changes made via standard wheel-mounted buttons. After a decade in production, the classically styled Porsche Boxster remains a serious mid-engine sports car.

THE BOX AND PACKAGING
The Porsche Boxster S comes packed in a hard clear plastic case and is attached to a black plastic display base with the vehicle information on it. The car is attached to the base via a small screw that comes up from the bottom of the display stand and goes into the bottom of the car. The case serves to protect the model and provide a display case for the collector. The clear case is inserted into a paperboard carrier which has the vehicle and company information on it. Once removed from the paperboard carrier the top of the plastic case simply lifts off to allow access to the car. If desired the car can be removed from the display base simply by removing the securing screw.

THE CAR
Atlas Model Railroad Co. Porsche Boxster S comes fully assembled and painted. I found no flaws in the assembly of the vehicle. The exterior is smooth and shiny (with flaws, this is discussed in the FINISH portion). The recessed lines for the doors and hood are decent however the paint seems too thick which hides some of the detail. Its chassis has basic molded detailed, the tires have no tread detail on the main tire itself, only on the outside edges of the tires, and the windshield is free of distortion and scratches.

Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights however the tail lights are painted on. The wheels have black rubber tires and chrome/silver rims. There are dual chromed exhaust pipes extending from under left side of the rear bumper, however they do not have drilled out ends which would have made a more realistic appearance. There are two side view mirrors and no rear view mirror. The side view mirrors are not chromed and are left painted red which does not create realistic reflective surfaces.

The interior looks nice and features bucket seats, steering wheel, console, stick shift, emergency brake handle, nice dashboard detailing, sun visors and headrests. There are windshield wipers molded in black at the base of the windshield. The headrests have a piece of clear plastic which runs between them. I am not sure of the purpose of this as the real vehicle doesnít have anything like this in place.

FINISH
The model body is painted in a smooth glossy finish of red. The molding, interior and the underside are black in color. The Porsche logo is in place on the hood and Boxster S on the rear. It also has Boxster S where the rear license plate is located I found two errors with the finish. The air intake on the driverís side is painted silver and the paint ran at the bottom of the intake and spilled out onto the red finish. The second is that there are two black paint drops on the passenger side door.

CONCLUSION
This Porsche Boxster S is a nicely done model with fine plastic detail. The finish does have flaws. It has detailed tires, clear lenses for headlights however the taillights are only painted on. The underside is fairly detailed. All the same this model should please modern model railroaders, railroad diorama builders, and scale car collectors. I would have no hesitation recommending this scale car to others.

Thanks to Atlas Model Railroad Co. for the review sample. Be sure to mention that you heard about it here when ordering.
